Robinson River Fish Camp
The town of Kangerlussuaq, which means “the big fjord” in Greenlandic, is situated on a plain overlooking the shores of the 170-kilometer (106-mile) long Kangerlussuaq Fjord. It might be surprising to learn that at the midpoint of this fjord lies the Arctic Circle, yet the fjord cuts through the country’s largest open, ice-free terrain. By the same token, many will be amazed (and anglers delighted!) that a network of waterways flowing into the fjord attract large schools of Arctic Char, which migrate along the fjord’s coast and up the rivers from June to late September.
Our excursion will begin with a short drive to the harbor, where we will board our boat and cruise a little more than 40 kilometers (25 miles) through the serene Kangerlussuaq Fjord. Upon arriving to our camp, located on the southern side of the fjord, you can head ashore to select one of the five 2-person tents and gather your equipment. The provisions include a sleeping bag, food, a fishing license, rods and reels; however, you must purchase bait at the camp or bring your own.
The river of glacial meltwater attracts anglers, who enjoy the surprising, rapid response of Greenland’s aggressive Arctic Char and the often lengthy battles that can ensue between fish and fisher.
With the rising of the tide, the concentration of Arctic Char swimming upstream from the fjord drastically increases. There are several good fishing spots along the river and within the neighboring runoffs. One of the best, where a bite is virtually guaranteed, lies 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) upriver at the waterfall. As the fish first start biting, the angler’s real work begins! Come prepared, as these fish are relentless fighters.
If you opt to keep one or more of your beautiful catches, our chef can help prepare the fish over an open fire during mealtime.
We will fish until the afternoon of day 2, giving you plenty of time to bait the hook, before we return to Kangerlussuaq.
