Oqaatsut w. icefishing and Restaurant H8

By boat you will be transported from Ilulissat Harbor through the wintery ocean where drifting icebergs will pass you on their path north out of the Disko Bay. Once we arrive in Oqaatsut, the boat will dock by the edge of the frozen bay. This time of year, the harbor in Oqaatsut is inaccessible due to the ice. This means that you will experience walking across the frozen bay and into the settlement. The hosts of H8 will welcome you by the boat and help you over the ice. It is completely safe to walk on the ice and the scenery from the ice is unforgettable.

When you get to H8 you will get dressed up in our warm full body suits – alike the ones that the Greenlandic fishermen uses nowadays. Along with our host you will go back out to the ice and find a good spot for ice fishing. Ice fishing is a method still used today, where the Greenlandic fishermen take their dogsled out through the backcountry in Ilulissat to reach the frozen Icefjord. Here they can drill a hole in the ice and catch the large halibuts with a longline. Our hosts will serve a warm beverage out on the ice – it gets cold standing still in down to -30 degrees Celsius. Remember all your warm clothes, hat, buff and mittens! 

After approx. 1 hour on the ice, you will return to Restaurant H8, where it is possible to heat up again after the hike, and to sit and enjoy the view over the bay. And there is plenty of time for you to experience the settlement on your own - for instance to go see the church, the small grocie store, or visit one of the many viewpoints in the settlement. 

For the day tour, lunch will be served in the cozy restuarant with view over the bay. For the evening tour, you will end the day in Oqaatsut with dinner at Restaurant H8 as well, before the boat takes you back to Ilulissat. 

The meal is created from some of Greenland’s fantastic fish or meat. Please provide us with the information when booking if you have any allergies or other preferences we should know about regarding the lunch or dinner at Restaurant H8.
